NEW SPEED RECORD: 22-YEAR-OLD CANADIAN, WORLD'S FASTEST DRUMMER

Tom Grosset of Toronto, Canada became the second person in history to break 1200 single strokes (hits) in 60 seconds at this year\92s WFD-World Fastest Drummer, Extreme Sport Drumming event. This means that his hands were moving over 20 times per second every second for a full minute. The previous record of 1203 was held for over a decade by Dream Theater\92s drummer Mike Mangini of Boston.

The new WFD World Record was set at WFD World Finals 2013. The event was held July 11-13 at the new Music City Center in Nashville, TN as a featured attraction of the summer NAMM Show. All records and scores were recorded by the Drumometer, a teaching tool created to detect the speed of drummers\92 hands and feet.

The WFD competition consisted of two categories, Battle of the Hands\99 and Battle of the Feet\99. The Preliminary Heats were held July 11 and 12. Tom Grosset was not allowed to compete for prizes as a former 2007 contest winner, in which he set the WFD sixteen-and-under record of 1194 singles in 60 seconds.

Included in the event were technical demonstrations, insight sessions, and appearances by WFD Champions and World Record Holders Matt Smith, Eric Okamoto and Randy Briggs. WFD guests included drumming legends Bernard Purdie, Danny Gottlieb, and Dom Famularo.

The top ten Fastest Hands and top ten Fastest Feet then stepped in to battle at WFD World Finals, on Saturday, July 13. The event was received by an enthusiastic audience who cheered wildly for the entire competition. Also appearing was the ever lovely and talented Miss WFD 2013 Melissa Mabry.

The Battle of the Feet winner was Spencer Dalton of Brandenburg, KY with a score of 846 Singles, followed by second place Dave Stroup of Dowagiac, MI (827), and third place Dan Laskowski of Windsor, Canada (778).

The Battle of the Hands winner was Dave Stroup of Dowagiac, MI with a very respectable 989 Singles in 60 seconds. Braxton Burke of Langley, KY placed second (943), while Cameron Monzon of Nashville, TN placed third (860).

WFD Champ Eric Okamoto set a new World Record for five stroke rolls in 60 seconds! This is Eric\92s fourth WFD World Record.

\93This year\92s Finals were packed out with excited fans! It was great to see Tom Grosset set a new WFD World Record. Canada is now home to two WFD World Records. Mike Machine Mallais holds the Fastest Feet record, and now Tom\92s 1208. I guess it\92s so cold up there that drumming fast is a great way to stay warm!\94 said Boo McAfee, creator of WFD.

Grand prizes were provided by Pearl, Sabian, Remo, Vic Firth, Axis, Modern Drummer, Alfred Publishing, and Drumometer.

Video of Tom Grosset\92s record-breaking run can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9FrW-Wr-ds. Click here to see Tom's official WFD World Record certificate.

Nashville, TN is definitely no stranger to WFD Speed Drumming World Records.
In 2000 Johnny Rabb set the first ever WFD World Record by playing 1027 single strokes in 60 seconds. WFD (short for World\92s Fastest Drummer) is a highly charged, interactive phenomenon and has spread feverishly around the world. The contest consists of two categories, Battle of the Hands \99 and Battle of the Feet \99. As WFD has grown there has become a need for more regional grass roots events. The first WFD Regional event was held in conjunction with Drum League at The Rutledge in downtown Nashville on June 26, 2008

The evening was hosted by WFD Champ Johnny Rabb and WFD founder Boo McAfee. Although the event was intended to be regional, competitors traveled from as far away as Oklahoma and Canada. Music City heated up quickly as WFD Champion Matt \91the kid\92 Smith took center stage and broke the long standing \91traditional grip\92 World Record held by WFD Champ Mike \91da man\92 Mangini. Matt played an astounding 1132 single strokes in 60 seconds, breaking Mike Mangini\92s previous record by 6 strokes.

The Battle of the Hands winner was Gary \91the skip\92 Skipper of Nashville, TN, with a score of 896 Singles. Tyler Boydstan placed second (845) while Big Frank placed third (816). The Battle of the Feet winner was Kevin Bernardy from Edmond, Okalahoma with an awesome score of 901 singles, followed by Ronnie McDowell Jr. (786) and Canada\92s Dan Laskowski (680). Keeping with the tradition of the much larger WFD World Finals and other extreme sporting events, of course there had to be that huge, gaudy WFD Championship Belt..

\93There were several wonderful stories that came out this first WFD Regional event. The Battle of the Hands winner, Gary Skipper has been competing at WFD since our very first WFD event, well over eight years ago. The Battle of the Feet winner Kevin Bernardy, who has competed for several years, drove all the way from Oklahoma. Special congrats go out to Kevin from our WFD family for he won on the third anniversary of his sobriety,\94 said WFD founder Boo McAfee.

World\92s Fastest Drummer Competition is sponsored by
PEARL, AXIS, PRO\B7MARK and REMO.
\93We are extremely excited about all of the new ventures at WFD, especially the announcement of the game version of WFD called WFD, The Game and Extreme Music Game Challenges,\94 added McAfee.

Click here to see Matt with his jazz combo (featuring Toronto trumpeter Mike Malonein) performing at a concert. Matt states, "I mainly wanted to show this because a lot of us associated with WFD get slammed for not having decent taste with a group, and I think I was OK here. This video should also serve as an example to bass players to be straight for a gig. The changes got a little strange."

Click here to see Matt solo. Concerning the solo Matt says, "Although I'm not a big fan of my own drum solos, I felt like I needed to have one, and since everybody thinks I'm some kind of fast guy or something, I thought I would make this a drum solo that was kind of parody of alot of those kind of guys all smashed together, although the solo is not that fast. Maybe it worked, maybe not. Anyway, hope you like this stuff. Yeah, I know I'm not perfect for sure. But we all got to keep workin' at it I guuess."
